Chalk It Up to Fun

When I used to go to craft shows I would walk the aisles saying, I can make that myself. Now with the internet I peruse sites saying the same thing. Pottery Barn had chalkboard rock vase filler that sparked this old feeling.

The idea of putting these little slates out for people to write messages on seemed fun and inviting. The perfect rocks were out in our front landscaping. Jenee had received these river rocks and did not know what to do with them so she put them out in the front yard. Score!

There are several places to find recipes on how to make your own inexpensive chalkboard paint. Sounds like fun but I wanted to make these stones right away. Since my surface was going to be small I decided to just buy the paint. Krylon has a great chalkboard spray paint.

The end result:
One of my favorite moments was when our friends, Kim and Myles, came over and Myles wrote a little message to us. We have also used these rocks to leave notes to each other as well as just having fun with pictures and other silliness.

Items needed to make your own chalkboard rocks:
  • river rocks or other very smooth rocks ( I think Michael's sells them)
  • Chalkboard pain - make your own or buy it
  • chalk
  • cardboard box
That's it. I think you can take if from here. The cardboard box is just to put the rocks in to avoid spraying paint everywhere. Condition the rocks before writing on them by rubbing chalk all over them and then rubbing it off.

Now that I have that spray paint, I have a couple more projects I want to try. Maybe I will have to look into making my own paint.
