Happy Birthday Cole!

Dear Cole,

When I was a little girl, I could never understand why people said, "Time flies." Then I became a mom and realized time in fact does fly. It goes by at the speed of sound or light, which ever is faster.

This year you and I are in the unique situation of being mom/teacher and son/student. I did not take this position lightly. You were my biggest consideration. Thank you for sharing your world with me. Being in your school, your class, gives me insight into who you are besides being my son. Of course I know you are one fantastic kid, but I am partial to you. What I have found is that others think pretty highly of you too. You have this ability to get along with everybody, to be this intelligent kid without being arrogant, to be helpful without expecting anything in return. Your nonchalant approach makes people like and respect you. I now realize that your friends' eagerness to have me in your class had little to do with me and everything to do with you.

You are one of the most self-motivated people I have ever met. You do not settle for doing something half way. Many times I have listened to you play the same section of a song over and over on the piano until you get it just right. This same zeal is in everything you do. This past week your Language Arts teacher shared your vocabulary quiz with me. She was so excited that you were able to write a funny, coherent story using all 16 vocabulary words. Your reason for not being able to stop was simple: you just could not stop.

People have asked me if you know what you would like to be when you grow up. I tell them that right now you are thinking about being an architect. Really, it does not matter to me what occupation you choose. I know that you will make the world a little brighter and bring happiness to others. In return, you will find happiness in all that you do. THAT is so much better than a big paycheck.
